The Isle of Iona is a special place that once visited is rarely forgotten. It seems to envelope travellers in its serenity, exuding a deep sense of spirituality and sanctuary.
"Iona is a holy isle and has been described as the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland. St Columba and 12 companions came here from Ireland in AD 563. The monastery they founded was one of the most important and influential in the British Isles."
(www.historicenvironment.scot) The landscape and architecture simply take your breath away, here you will find some of the whitest sand and bluest seas in all of Scotland. The abbey and neighbouring nunnery are truly spectacular, instantly transporting you back to a time many centuries ago. And so it was that inspiration struck.
After discovering Iona's beautiful, unique, and extraordinary marble, I just knew I had to create a piece that incorporated this very special stone. "The Duke of Argyll purchased and polished a piece of this marble in 1693 and there is evidence that the high altar of the Medieval Abbey church was made of Iona marble" (https://visitmullandiona.co.uk)
